Definition Essays - November 30th

Good day, and I hope everyone had a beautiful Thanksgiving.

Journal Writing

In journal writing today, the prompt is "If I could fix one thing in this country..." or "In America..."
We are focusing on telling one story that will persuade your reader to feel a certain way.

Remember, keep working on those at home journals.

TEE

In TEE, you should have handed in your expository essay; if you forgot it, email me ASAP.
 Also, last week we read Chapter 5 of Mice and Men; if you missed it, catch up because there is a test 12/14

Expository Essay Draft Day

Good Day Everyone!

Journal Class:

In journal class today, we are responding to the prompt "I am good at" and discussing it.

The journal homework is to keep on working on at home journals.

In journal class today, we had a visit from the librarian, which was helpful to us for the expository essay research.  I also showed you your midterm grade forms. If you were absent you NEED to sign your forms.

TEE:
BUSINESS: I AM MOVING THE DUE DATE OF THE EXPOSITORY ESSAY TO 11/30. I WANT TIME TO LOOK AT YOUR DRAFTS!

In TEE, we discussed rebuttal paragraphs. This lesson, along with an example, is available in "Documents."    After learning rebuttals and discussing them, we wrote our own.  If you missed the lesson, you need to catch up, because each expository essay MUST have a rebuttal paragraph.

After rebuttals, we edited our drafts.  First, we read with a partner for general impressions.  Then, we corrected them for spelling and grammar. Last, we went over them according to the rubric.  The rubric is available under "documents;" it is how I will be grading your essay.

At the end of class, I collected drafts. Monday, I will hand them back with my comments and your partners comments.  The final draft is due 11/30.

Homework: Complete your works cited page, Read Chapter 5 of Of Mice and Men.

Today we are diving deeper into the expository essay.  If you will remember, today you were supposed to have picked a style (compare/contrast, cause/effect, or persuasive) and had a thesis statement and outline.  Please take those out now.

1. Draft your essay - remember 3 sources and good paragraph format.
   
2. You should also read the chapter and complete the questions in Tips for Successful Writers that pertains to your kind of expository essay. Compare/contrast writers should do Chapter 10, cause and effect writers should do chapter 11, and persuasive writers should do chapter 13.
3. If you are still confused about citing things in text, or creating a works cited page, consult the MLA portion of Diana Hacker's "A Writer's Reference." THIS IS OPTIONAL BUT HELPFUL

Ladies- After some technical problems, we are up and running.

8th graders-

If you are in the first/second period 8th grade class, please make an assertion (about anything, remember: an assertion is your opinion) and support it with three facts.

If you are in the 6th/7th period 8th grade class, please write the next phase of your autobiography. You should write at least a page on the most important moment you have had with a significant person in your life.

7th graders-

You are writing the exposition and rising action (include setting, characters, and conflict) for your narrative based on a painting in your book. You should write at least a page, and will need to use interesting and specific verbs.

Today in class, we learned how to do a double entry journal. This is a helpful way to keep track of what you are reading. We also went over the rules for writing grammatically correct dialogue.

If you are an eighth grader, for homework:

-finish all of your classwork. This means a double entry journal for "The Yolk's on Me," and a written dialogue.

-pick a story (a fairytale, a nes article, a magazine piece, a short story or poem, or a few pages of a longer book) and summarize it. Then do a double entry journal for the story you chose.

If you are a seventh grader, for homework:

-finish your dialogue for "The Yolk's on Me"
-Read the first chapter of the "Brother's in Arms" and do a double entry journal for the chapter

Today in class, we reviewed plot structure, (exposition, rising action, turning point, climax, falling action, and resolution) as well as a way to summarize anything you read which is called Somebody Wanted But So. Papers were due today.  10-1 got their tests back.  Both classes read Chapter 23, and took notes on the different characters' (Scout, Jem, Atticus, and Alexandra) views on the death penalty, juries, and social class.

Finish your classwork.  Read Chapter 24.

Today in class, we finished the Act II, Scene ii packets, and then listened to the section on tape.

In class, we went over rhetorical and argumentative techniques.  We then found examples of them in Atticus' closing argument.

Test on Chapters 12-21 tomorrow.  By Friday, read Chapter 22, and tell a piece of the story from another character's perspective.  It can be a news article, diary entry, letter, or dialogue.
